Digital Portfolio: World History (CORE)Here is where I will place all of my produced online content for my World History class. I have History 3rd Period, in the same room that I have English in.
Currently, we have just finished a unit on the history of Islam and its followers. We are starting a unit on West Africa and learning about its trade and resources. |

Andalusian Poem

In my Core class we are currently reading a book called Shabanu, Daughter of the Wind by Suzanne Fisher Staples. A lot of symbolic and important events happen in the story. One of our assignments right now is to write a poem about one of those events in an Andalusian form. Andalusian poetry originated in Muslim Spain hundreds of years ago and uses personification, sensory details, and similes to illustrate events with words. I'm writing my poem on the first rain of the season, a weather event in the first chapters of the book.
This is not the first poem we've done in Core, but we have seen before that poems and songs help people remember information quite well. This project has taught us a lot about Islamic art and has helped us to think much more deeply about the events in our book as well as interpret them in our own way.
Like our other poem about Rome, this assignment immerses both English and History. Poetry is a form of literature and Shabanu is a novel, but the type of poetry we used here originated in Muslim Spain. In this way it combines both of our curricular subjects for Core.
My final for this assignment is not yet due, but I've plotted out my rough draft on Google Docs. It won't be the first assignment for this class I've done there, fortunately, but we are learning how to format different kinds of poetry.

Hall of Fame Project

The objective of this project was to show what we had learned about the important figures of the Renaissance, Reformation, and Scientific Revolution by doing a biographical report on an important figure from the era. I decided to do mine on Isaac Newton (1642 - 1727), an important scientist who discovered many important laws and rules of the modern studies of physics and optics, as well as key basics in other scientific fields. I decided to study Newton because I find his contributions particularly interesting. In addition to writing about their contributions, we also had to give biographical information. I found this aspect of Newton interesting, too.
I liked doing this project because its instructions were clear and we could work hard and independently without having things be given to us in a difficult way. For example, we had to follow certain guidelines, but we were also given a lot of freedom to be creative in our project and research. We could make our poster unique to us while still having it be informational. I liked that a lot.
I used Google Drive to create my poster (Google Drawing, to be specific), which was a tool I had previously used in History, English, and Computers in the past.
I was familiar with the tool I used, but I also learned a lot about it while creating the final result. I like that I can learn while teaching at this school. That's something I'd never done at school before.

Board Game Project

To wrap up what we had learned in both English and History this year, we created a board game in class together. For this project, we were split up into groups of four and given a History unit and an English unit. From the information here we created 20 questions; half English, half History, each. Together, the group created 80 questions. Then we customized our Manila paper board, created rules, and presented then played our games. My group consisted of my friends Mark, Joei, and Nicholas. Our units were West Africa and Language Network's Chapter 6 & the short West-Africa themed story "Sundiata". My questions were about interjections and the spread of the Arabic language.
Something I liked about this project was its focus on visuals and accessibility. I like to write and read words, but I also like learning visually and playing games! I thought it was really cool to be able to create one and make it educational in the process.
This project connected our English to our History, but I also used Microsoft Publisher to create my question cards. That was something I had picked up and had recently been using in Computers. I learned and taught how to create different sizes for card templates, which was something I hadn't done before, so I can say that I self-taught.
