Digital Portfolio: Advanced Band
This is where I will place all of my produced online content for my 7th Period Band class. Right now we are focusing most of our learning on our assigned concert pieces as well as our FMCMEA Honor Band music. In addition to this we are also learning about tuning and doing some tech-related tuning activities. We've also learned and reviewed three basic scales: B, Eb, and F.

Me and My Flute

Since we haven't done any specific projects in my 7th Period Band class, I've decided to write a bit about the instrument I play, which is the flute. I've been playing the flute since the 5th Grade. I'd like to think I'm pretty good at it. I've learned a lot about music by playing it. It was the second tone instrument I learned and definitely my favorite.
I like playing the flute. I even gave mine a name (Tate). The flute is in the key of "C" and in concert pitch, so I don't have to transpose (play notes other than the ones written to fit into harmony with the rest of the ensemble). The flute has helped me learn how to red a wide range of music and rhythm and use my mouth better. It also made it easier for me to learn to whistle. In addition to this, playing any kind of musical instrument can be seen as an advantage.
This probably comes as a surprise, but the flute ties into a lot of different subjects. The flute is only 2nd to the drums when it comes to being the oldest instrument in an ensemble. Many of the civilizations we do units on in my Core class had some form of woodwind instrument in their culture. West African civilizations gave the flute's ascendants a good fundamental basis. The Greeks had many different types of flutes that were sacred to certain gods. Any musical instrument can tie into science since it creates soundwaves. The frequency of these waves determine the pitch of a note.
Before I learned the flute I had taken a year of mallets/percussion, so I knew how to read music to some degree. As mentioned above, though, the flute's range is very wide compared to other instruments. It helped me a lot in learning how to read music and rhythm. I also had no idea what tuning an instrument was before last year and now I know how to tune and help tune several instruments. The flute is my favorite musical instrument. It's useful, pretty, interesting, and educational. And it's a part of me.
